— President Donald Trump’s
proposed budget
cuts significant funds from NASA, scaling back key initiatives but increasing support for efforts to
send a person to Mars
.
During his speech before Congress, Trump vowed to “plant a banner on Mars,” underlining the importance of surpassing China in both bringing people back to the Moon and launching a manned mission to the Red Planet.
Under Trump’s proposal, NASA’s budget would be cut by $6 billion in what the nonprofit Planetary Society says is the biggest single-year cut for the agency in history.
Under the budget
Human space exploration initiatives have been energized, with over $7 billion designated for lunar missions and $1 billion set aside for fresh endeavors aimed at sending humans to Mars.
These two objectives complement each other, where having a base on the moon is seen as an essential stepping stone for manned missions further into space.
To allow for the new expense, the agency would see big cuts to space science and Earth science programs. That includes eliminating an effort dedicated to getting
samples from the Mars rover
returning to Earth in collaboration with the European Space Agency and scaling back proposals for a moon-orbiting space station.
Support missions would similarly be affected by reductions, involving decreases in staff levels as well as funding for upkeep, building, and environmental adherence.
This follows a report from the National Academies.
sought a rise in funding
to update the agency’s infrastructure.
The Artemis program, which aims to put humans back on the moon, would cut the Space Launch System and Orion capsule after
Artemis III
lands astronauts on the moon. That would mean retiring those systems after just three flights.
In addition to these reductions, the budget proposes enhanced collaborations with commercial entities and transferring some responsibilities to the private sector. NASA’s commercial crew initiative has involved firms such as Boeing and
Elon Musk’s SpaceX
, which earn substantial income from governmental agreements.
The budget would additionally reduce NASA’s sustainable aviation initiative, proceed with the removal of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, and terminate financing for satellites used in monitoring the climate.
It would similarly decrease NASA’s funding for
the International Space Station
.
It also marks Trump’s
second attempt to cut STEM education programs
run by NASA, which the proposal deems “woke.” The programs are designed to help increase the pipeline for STEM workers and encourage interest in STEM fields.
Trump attempted to eliminate those funds in his first term, and President Barack Obama also tried to cut funds from the program. In both cases, Congress overruled the president and restored the funding.
