, thought to belong to a massive carnivore, were discovered in the Caribbean.

Atop the food chain in their individual ecosystems, they resided. These creatures exhibited great adaptability, able to thrive in multiple habitats and feed on numerous types of prey.
Although they were formerly abundant throughout South America, sebecids disappeared from the region approximately 66 million years ago, coinciding with the mass extinction event that led to the demise of the dinosaurs.

The body of water dividing the islands from South America would have acted as a substantial obstacle, hindering terrestrial creatures from moving between these areas.
This prompted scientists to suggest the
GAARlandia theory
This implies that a transient land bridge or a series of islands may have linked the two continents millions of years ago.
If confirmed accurate, this theory might clarify how the sebecids—as well as potentially other species—managed to move to the islands and secure their presence within a different ecological system.
