Women are advancing significantly in Texas State Technical College’s (TSTC) Avionics Technology program, with over five individuals scheduled to graduate this coming spring.
The students will cross the stage during TSTC’s Spring 2025 Graduation ceremony, set for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, at the BASE within the Extraco Events Center in Waco. As reported by TSTC’s Business Analytics and Reporting division, these accomplishments will increase the count of women graduating from the program to over 18 since 2014.

“When I consider anything technical, I see it as more male-oriented territory, which is why I’m pleased to be part of a community where I can connect with women like her,” stated Sophia Castillo, who studies at Temple University.
Castillo was drawn to avionics after touring the program and becoming intrigued by its complexity. She has since developed skills in soldering, reading schematics and circuit building, and hopes to find work in Central Texas.
Calleigh Chau, of Hewitt, echoed Castillo’s excitement. With a lifelong interest in aerospace and space exploration, Chau said the program’s technical demands pushed her in new ways.
“I really enjoyed learning more about how things actually work,” she said, adding that she plans to pursue engineering studies at McLennan Community College and hopes to work in the aerospace industry.
Amy Nolasco from Corsicana mentioned that her motivation stemmed from both professional opportunities and being close to her family.
Nolasco stated, “There aren’t numerous professionals specialized in avionics within the sector. Hence, you’ve got a high probability of securing employment.”
