Snapchat has reportedly
abandoned ideas for a children’s edition
Regarding its highly complex application, this choice comes after an extensive seven-month trial phase. This decision was disclosed during
the corporation’s first-quarter 2025 financial statementrelease
, showcasing the platform’s continuous development in line with user preferences.
Last year, Snapchat created quite a stir when they initially introduced a significant overhaul to their design. The company removed the Snap Map and Stories sections, streamlining the interface to a more straightforward trio of icons: Chat, Camera, and Spotlight. However, user tests revealed that this streamlined approach did not resonate well with their most dedicated users. As a result, Snapchat saw a decline in its daily active users in North America, dropping to 99 million. This figure represents a decrease from both the second quarter of 2023 where it stood at 100 million, as well as during the same period in the previous year (third quarter of 2022), which also reported 100 million users.
Although Snapchat experienced a decline in daily active users (DAUs) within North America, which wasn’t something to cheer about, the overall global numbers were much brighter. The total number of DAUs surged to a new peak of 460 million, marking an increase of 38 million compared to the previous year. Adding another highlight, the social media platform recently achieved an unprecedented milestone with over 900 million monthly active users (MAUs) globally. Despite these positive developments, the firm reported lackluster financials for the initial quarter, clocking in at only $1.36 billion—an impressive rise of 14% from the same period the prior year.
Testing a New Interface
In response to user feedback about the crowded layout, Snapchat is now experimenting with a sleeker “enhanced five-tab interface.” The redesign keeps all present tabs intact but boosts user interaction by simplifying access to Spotlight content and integrating additional Stories seamlessly within the chat feature. Under this update, Spotlight appears immediately adjacent to the Camera tab. This positioning allows for effortless navigation across different functionalities.
Snap has mentioned that their most engaged users have shown significant positive response regarding this five-tab design.
“Our most active Snapchat users regularly showed a liking for a design with five tabs, appreciating the familiar experience of discovering tiled content along with having a separate Map tab,” -Snap
Snap CEO Evan Spiegel acknowledged that the recent, much simpler redesign had stirred up significant turbulence. Reflecting on this change, he noted that it served as an enlightening journey. Ultimately, however, this shift adversely affected loyal users who frequently utilize functions like the map and Stories.
“Regarding the straightforward Snapchat interface, we gained valuable insights from the redesign; however, we discovered that it posed significant challenges, particularly for avid users—those deeply attached to how Snapchat currently functions—who frequently utilize features like the map and stories. The new three-tab layout complicated matters as it became more challenging to locate stories, subscriptions, and even the map,” according to Snap CEO Evan Spiegel.
The choice to switch back to a more intricate design demonstrates Snapchat’s dedication to catering to its primary user group. As stated in their latest financial report, even with uncertain user expansion in North America, worldwide engagement has increased.
