The Case for Mega Evolutions in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
The latest trailer for Pokémon Legends: Z-A gave players a glimpse at one of the confirmed new Mega Evolutions—Mega Dragonite. While many fans adore Dragonite, it’s hard to argue that this particular Pokémon needed a Mega Evolution. However, there are several other Pokémon that would greatly benefit from the addition of a Mega form.
Gen 6 Starters Deserve Better Than Gen 4 Got in Arceus
When the starters for Legends: Z-A were revealed, some fans expressed disappointment, especially with Chikorita being chosen. This is understandable given the high expectations set by previous games. Fennekin and Chespin, on the other hand, are widely loved, and Greninja has had a massive impact on the franchise. It’s no surprise that Greninja was voted Google’s Pokémon of the Year in 2020. If these Pokémon aren’t going to be the stars of the game, they at least deserve a Mega Evolution.
Aegislash Deserves a Mega Evolution
Aegislash is unique in its design, featuring a sword and shield that stand out among other Pokémon. Unlike most of its counterparts, which often resemble animals or everyday objects, Aegislash brings a more fantasy-like aesthetic to the series. Its design is so distinctive that a Mega evolution could make it one of the most impressive Pokémon in the game. With a potential type change, it could also offer new strategic possibilities.
Eevee and Its Evolutions Could Use a Mega Boost
Eevee hasn’t seen a new evolution since Sylveon in 2013. Fans have long speculated about a new Eeveelution, but it seems unlikely to appear in Z-A. However, if the game does include a Mega Evolution, it makes sense that Eevee, rather than just one of its evolutions, would receive the treatment. Chandelure is a beautifully designed Ghost/Fire Pokémon, but it often gets overshadowed by other options like Ceruledge in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. A Mega Evolution could give Chandelure the spotlight it deserves, making it a more appealing choice for teams. If Z-A gives Chandelure a new form, it could help reintroduce this Pokémon to a wider audience.
Starmie Deserves a Comeback
Starmie, a Water/Psychic Pokémon from Generation 1, has often been overlooked in favor of other iconic Pokémon like Slowbro. However, with its unique typing and strong abilities, Starmie could shine if given a Mega Evolution. This would not only honor its legacy but also bring it back into the spotlight for newer generations of players.
Pikachu Is a Natural Choice for a Mega Evolution
As the mascot of the Pokémon franchise, it’s almost unthinkable that Pikachu wouldn’t receive a Mega Evolution at some point. While it’s unusual for a first-stage Pokémon to have a Mega form, Pikachu has always been an exception. From its Dynamax and Gigantamax forms in Sword & Shield to its own game, Let’s Go Pikachu, Pikachu has always had special treatment. It’s only a matter of time before it gets a Mega form, even if it’s not in Z-A.
Dragalge Could Benefit from a Mega Evolution
Dragalge is a Dragon-type Pokémon that doesn’t quite match up to the intimidation factor of others like Dragonite or Charizard. A Mega Evolution could help it feel more complete and powerful, making it a more viable option for competitive play. If leaks are to be believed, Dragalge might finally get its chance in Z-A.
Clefable Would Be a Great Addition to the Mega Lineup
The introduction of Fairy-types in Generation 6 makes sense to celebrate them with a new Mega Evolution. Clefable, a mono-Fairy-type Pokémon, is a perfect candidate. Its evolutionary line was inspired by fairies before typing existed, making it a natural fit for a Mega form. While this hasn’t been officially confirmed, it’s a possibility that fans have been speculating about.
The Z-A Starters Should Follow Arceus’ Example
Arceus gave its starters Hisuian forms, which were region-specific and unique to that game. It’s reasonable to expect that Z-A will follow a similar approach, but instead of regional forms, it could introduce Mega Evolutions for the starters. Given that Kingambit is a powerful Pokémon, it’s likely that it has a Mega Evolution. Based on the hints in the trailer, a Poison/Steel Mega Kingambit could be in store for players.
