Upcoming Apple Products and What’s Missing in the AirPods Max 2
Apple’s annual September event is fast approaching, bringing with it a wave of new products. Among the most anticipated are the iPhone 17, the next-gen Apple Watch SE 3, Apple Watch Series 11, and Apple Watch Ultra 3. There’s also speculation about the release of the AirPods Max 2, though supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests mass production might not happen until 2027.
Despite this uncertainty, there’s widespread belief that the AirPods Max 2 are in development and will eventually arrive. Rumors suggest improvements such as a new hard case, enhanced active noise cancellation, touch controls, and longer battery life. However, many of these features were expected to be included in the USB-C version of the AirPods Max launched last year.
For Apple to maintain its position in the headphones market, it needs to embrace popular features that consumers are already enjoying on other high-end noise-canceling headphones. Here are some key recommendations for the AirPods Max 2 before they ship.
Give the AirPods Max 2 Their Own Chipset
The current H2 processor used in the AirPods Pro 2 offers improved noise cancellation and processing power. However, the AirPods Max 2 need their own proprietary chipset—something twice as powerful as the H2. This would support exclusive features like Spatial Audio for games, giving Apple a competitive edge over rivals like the Bose QuietComfort Ultra and Sony WH-1000XM6.
Expand Connectivity Beyond the Apple Ecosystem
While all AirPods models connect seamlessly with Apple devices, their compatibility with Android is limited and often frustrating. Beats’ audio products, on the other hand, are optimized for both iOS and Android. Adopting similar technology could significantly improve the AirPods Max 2’s connectivity, making them more versatile than ever before.
Welcome New Sound Architecture
The original AirPods Max had decent audio quality, but there’s room for improvement. The AirPods Max 2 should feature a new driver system with a higher frequency range, offering better sound across all media formats. Features like Adaptive Audio, which blends ANC and Transparency modes, and adaptive EQ should be standard. Additionally, Apple should support ALAC over Bluetooth to allow for high-quality audio without being tethered to an iPhone.
Revamp the Design Without Compromising Flair
The original AirPods Max were aesthetically pleasing, but their design had several flaws. Issues like water condensation, sagging mesh material, and a poorly designed Smart Case need to be addressed. Apple should also introduce more personalization options, such as swappable earcup shells and headbands, as well as a premium carry case that matches the iPhone’s aesthetic.
Make Spatial Audio Universal
Apple’s 3D audio format has been a game-changer, but it’s currently limited to specific content and platforms. To stay competitive, Apple must make Personalized Spatial Audio available across all platforms and music streaming services. This will enhance the listening experience and ensure the AirPods Max 2 remain at the forefront of wireless audio innovation.
