A New Era of Repairability
Philips has introduced a groundbreaking initiative aimed at simplifying the repair process for its products, potentially making a significant impact in reducing electronic waste. As a leading health-tech company, Philips offers a wide range of devices, from shavers to air fryers. The new scheme focuses on 3D-printable replacement parts, enabling consumers to fix their gadgets at home instead of discarding them.
The pilot project began with a small but practical part: the comb guard for one of its shavers. Earlier this year, the company released a version that could be printed up to 3 millimeters in length. Now, a larger size is available, with more options being developed, according to the company’s website.
This initiative, known as the Fixables line, is currently being tested in the Czech Republic. Philips is collaborating with Prusa Research and LePub for this pilot. However, the 3D printing files will also be accessible for download on Printables, a popular platform among 3D printing enthusiasts.
Philips emphasizes that the durability of the replacement parts depends on users following the recommended 3D printing materials and guidelines. This means the success of the project still needs to be proven in practice.
Beyond cost savings, this approach offers convenience for consumers who may not own a 3D printer. Online services like Prusa’s Printables allow users to order the parts and have them delivered, eliminating a major obstacle to DIY repairs.
Josef Průša, founder of Prusa Research, highlighted the importance of open-source files in enabling longer product lifespans during a demonstration video. He noted that these files empower people to maintain their devices for extended periods.
One of the key drivers behind this change is the growing pressure from right-to-repair laws and sustainability campaigns. These include new regulations in the European Union, where Philips is based. In 2022, over 62 million tons of e-waste were generated globally, according to data from the World Health Organization.
E-waste contains harmful substances such as lead and mercury, posing serious environmental and health risks. Improper disposal can contaminate air, soil, dust, and water, leading to long-term damage.
Philips is not alone in offering self-repair options. Other companies like Logitech are also exploring similar initiatives. However, Philips’ decision to use open-source design has sparked interest among environmentalists and maker communities online.
Abhimanyu Ghoshal from New Atlas praised the project, stating that it makes sense for companies to support their products in this way, especially as access to 3D printers increases worldwide. He emphasized the growing interest in repairability and the urgent need to reduce waste.
