Startup Secures Multimillion-Dollar Funding for Groundbreaking Water Tech

Access to clean, safe water is a fundamental human right. Yet, over 4 billion people experience water scarcity for at least one month each year, according to recent studies. This growing crisis has prompted innovative solutions from startups around the world. One such company is Kumulus, a Tunisia-based startup that is redefining how communities can access water by turning air into drinkable water.

Kumulus specializes in atmospheric water generators, which extract moisture from the air and convert it into safe, potable water. The company recently secured $3.6 million in seed funding to scale its operations and bring this technology to more regions facing water shortages. This investment highlights the growing recognition of the potential of atmospheric water generation as a sustainable solution.

Each Kumulus unit can produce between 20 to 30 liters of water per day, depending on the power source—standard electricity or solar energy. The process involves pulling ambient air into the system, filtering it, and cooling it until condensation forms. The collected water then undergoes a multi-step purification process, including remineralization to enhance taste and health benefits. Users can access the water directly through an integrated tap, and the system can be monitored via a mobile or web application.

Kumulus units have already been deployed in various locations, including schools, hotels, remote camps, and villages across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. These installations demonstrate the versatility and effectiveness of the technology. By generating water locally, Kumulus eliminates the need for bottled water, reduces single-use plastic, and minimizes the environmental impact associated with transporting and treating water.

The success of Kumulus has attracted support from notable investors, including French bank Bpifrance, Spadel, a leading European bottled water company, PlusVC, Khalys Venture, Flat6Labs, family offices, and climate-focused founders. Their confidence in the technology underscores its potential to transform water access in vulnerable communities.

“This is a strong vote of confidence in our technology and our vision,” said Iheb Triki, CEO and co-founder of Kumulus. “Their involvement shows that we are on the right path to making a meaningful impact.”

The funding will also support the launch of Kumulus Boks, a higher-capacity model designed for industrial and community-scale use. Additionally, the company plans to expand its operations in France, Spain, Tunisia, and Saudi Arabia, further increasing its reach and impact.

As global droughts intensify and the demand for potable water rises, innovations like those developed by Kumulus offer a promising alternative to traditional water supply systems. By providing off-grid, low-impact solutions, these technologies can help bridge the global water gap and improve daily life in some of the most affected regions.
