In a remarkable feat of amateur astrophotography, Michele Hernandez Bayliss, a Vermont-based astronomer, has managed to capture breathtaking photos of two of the most famous galaxies in our universe: the

Croc’s Eye galaxy (Messier 94)

iconic Whirlpool galaxy (Messier 51)

A Backyard Observatory With A Stellar View

Hernandez Bayliss, with decades of experience as a visual astronomer, embarked on her foray into astrophotography quite lately.

In the last couple of years, she has devoted herself fully to constructing her personal observatory at her residence in Weybridge, Vermont.

Even though Vermont experiences highly erratic weather, characterized by overcast days and brief moments of clarity during the night, Hernandez Bayliss managed to take advantage of a special chance in late April to photograph the breathtaking Croc’s Eye galaxy.

“The challenging aspect regarding galaxies lies in the processing—specifically with the Crocodile Eye, where the difficulty stemmed from its much smaller size than anticipated within my 990 mm telescope,” Hernandez Bayliss stated in an emailed response.

The Beauty of the Whirlpool Galaxy

Earlier this year, Hernandez Bayliss aimed her telescope at the famous
Whirlpool galaxy (Messier 51)
, an impressive spiral galaxy renowned for its luminous nucleus and expansive spiraling arms.

On this occasion, she employed a mix of RGB and hydrogen-alpha (Ha) filters to uncover additional details.

During a span of 16 hours in February, the amateur astronomer managed to capture the intricate details of the Whirlpool galaxy, encompassing its finer structures.

The outcomes are impressive: a vibrant depiction of a “grand-design” spiral galaxy that captures the attention with its complex details.

Remarkably, the spiral arms of the Whirlpool galaxy are thought to have been affected by a near pass with another, smaller galaxy.

This exchange has probably contributed to accentuating the prominent spiral design of M51, which Hernandez Bayliss’s photograph depicts with great elegance.

How an Astronomer Overcame the Biggest Challenges in Astrophotography

Astrophotography is far from easy, and Hernandez Bayliss faced numerous obstacles.

The main factor, as she points out, was the requirement for unobstructed, pitch-black night skies. In Vermont, frequent cloud cover and illuminated evenings pose significant challenges for those engaged in astrophotography.

“So it was awesome to get two nights in quick succession with no clouds, no moon and clear skies — a miracle!,” said Vermont-based astrophotographer
