Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla has entered into a significant $16.5 billion chip contract with Samsung. According to a regulatory filing by Samsung, the contract is set to begin on July 26, 2025, once orders are received, and will continue until December 31, 2033. While Samsung did not initially name the counterparty, Musk later confirmed on social media platform X that Tesla was indeed the company involved in the deal.

Musk shared additional details about the partnership, stating that Samsung’s new Texas fabrication plant will be dedicated to producing Tesla’s next-generation AI6 chip. He emphasized the strategic importance of this arrangement, noting that Samsung currently produces the AI4 chip, while TSMC will handle the AI5 chip, which has just completed its design phase and will initially be manufactured in Taiwan before moving to Arizona.

The CEO also mentioned that Samsung has agreed to allow Tesla to assist in maximizing manufacturing efficiency. He expressed his personal commitment to accelerating progress, suggesting that the deal could potentially be even larger than the reported $16.5 billion.

Samsung cited a request from the other party to protect trade secrets when it decided not to disclose the name of the counterparty or other details of the contract until the end of 2033. The company also warned investors to carefully consider the possibility of changes or termination of the contract, as key aspects of the agreement remain confidential.

Despite these uncertainties, Samsung’s stock rose over 6% in trading on Monday, reaching its highest level since September 2024. This increase reflects investor confidence in the company’s future prospects, particularly in light of its ongoing efforts to expand its foundry services.

Expansion of Foundry Services and Technological Advancements

Samsung’s foundry service plays a crucial role in the semiconductor industry, as it manufactures chips based on designs provided by other companies. It is the second-largest provider of foundry services globally, trailing only behind Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

In April, Samsung announced its goal to begin mass production of 2-nanometer chips in its foundry business and secure major orders for next-generation technology. Local South Korean media outlets have also reported that American chip firm Qualcomm may place an order for chips manufactured using Samsung’s 2-nanometer technology. This development could further solidify Samsung’s position in the global semiconductor market.

However, Samsung faces challenges in capturing demand for AI-related memory products. The company has fallen behind competitors SK Hynix and Micron in high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, which are essential components in AI chipsets. SK Hynix, the leader in HBM, has become the primary supplier of these chips to American AI giant Nvidia.

Samsung has reportedly been working to get the latest version of its HBM chips certified by Nvidia, but recent reports suggest that these plans have been delayed until at least September.

Market Outlook and Future Challenges

As Samsung prepares to release its earnings report on Thursday, the company expects its second-quarter profit to more than halve. Analysts have attributed this disappointing forecast to weak orders for its foundry business and difficulties in capturing AI demand for its memory products.
