When it comes to diners, there are certain expectations that should be met. From the moment you walk in, you expect a warm and welcoming environment, comfortable seating, and a menu that offers classic American fare. On the day I visited, the restaurant was already drawing a long line of families, tourists, and Tesla enthusiasts. People were circling the building, recording videos with their phones mounted on selfie sticks. One person even wore a “Back to the Future” shirt featuring a Cybertruck instead of the DeLorean. This kind of excitement is understandable, given Musk’s reputation and the hype surrounding the project.
Musk first mentioned the idea of a drive-in restaurant in 2018, before his transformation into a misinformation spreader and Trump donor. He later declared the finished restaurant to be “one of the coolest spots in LA!” However, the reality didn’t match the promise. The restaurant aimed to open other locations worldwide, with Optimus robots serving food by next year—though this claim was quickly deleted.
A Hype-Driven Experience
The Tesla Diner is designed to look like an alien spacecraft, though the aesthetic is somewhat generic. Outside, two massive movie screens play space-themed content, but they block the windows of a nearby apartment building, causing frustration for residents. The parking lot lacks traditional drive-in theater features, and the noise from the screens is not directed properly toward parked vehicles.
Inside, the experience is chaotic. Customers place orders at touchscreens rather than interacting with cashiers. The space is loud and crowded, with staff struggling to move around. The food takes time to prepare, and the quality is disappointing. The burgers are overcooked, the fries are greasy, and the bacon is chewy and overpriced.
A Disappointing Culinary Experience
The food at the Tesla Diner is not worth the wait or the price. My burger was missing half of its bottom bun, and the attempt to deliver the advertised “smashed, crunchy edges” resulted in a scorched patty. The bacon, which was supposed to be crispy, was more rubbery and had a sickly-sweet maple glaze. Even the condiments were just relabeled versions of standard sauces.
Despite the high prices, the portions are small, and the overall experience is underwhelming. The only redeeming feature is the “Skypad” rooftop, which offers a slightly better view and a more appealing design. However, it’s underutilized, and the rest of the space feels drab and uninspired.
A Missed Opportunity
The Tesla Diner is intended to make a statement about Tesla’s brand, but it fails to deliver on practicality. The design is ill-considered, the atmosphere is an afterthought, and the system is disorganized. While some diehard Tesla fans may continue to support the restaurant, it’s unlikely to attract the average Angeleno, who has access to a wide variety of dining options.
Musk’s vision for the future seems disconnected from real-world needs. The restaurant is more of a tourist trap than a genuine dining experience. As the novelty wears off, it will need to offer something more substantial to keep customers coming back.
