Advancements in Ocean Temperature Monitoring
For years, scientists have raised concerns about the rising temperatures of our oceans. Warmer waters can pose significant risks to both people and the planet. In response, a team of researchers from the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology in South Korea has developed an innovative system that uses artificial intelligence to address the limitations of traditional satellite data when tracking sea surface temperatures.
According to a recent announcement, the AI model is capable of generating “continuous, high-resolution datasets with unprecedented accuracy.” These datasets could be essential for scientists monitoring ocean temperatures. The warming of the oceans has been associated with various extreme weather events, including those linked to the El Niño and La Niña systems.
The research team’s breakthrough, detailed in the journal Remote Sensing of Environment, aims to fill gaps in satellite data. Everyday challenges such as cloud cover and storms often hinder satellite observations. By integrating AI, the reliability of the information can be significantly improved.
Jungho Im, who led the UNIST research team, stated in the release that “this technology could also be instrumental in early warning systems for marine disasters, such as marine heat waves, helping to safeguard communities and ecosystems.”
The United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimates that over 90 percent of the excess heat trapped in the Earth system due to human-caused global warming has been absorbed by the oceans. This warming can intensify rainfall, droughts, and periods of extreme heat, providing critical data points for tracking these changes.
Impacts of Warming Oceans
Ocean heat waves, which can devastate marine habitats, have tripled in length due to the climate crisis, according to reports. One notable example was “The Blob,” a marine heat wave that lasted from 2013 to 2016 and spanned from Alaska to Mexico. It caused fishing shortages, impacting both humans and seabirds, and led some species to migrate beyond their usual ranges.
Warmer waters can also promote the growth of algae blooms. Toxic algae can poison marine life and disrupt food chains. Additionally, if algae and phytoplankton begin to grow in different areas, the food systems that depend on them may be compromised.
The thermal expansion of water due to increased heat contributes to rising sea levels. Moreover, warmer water can accelerate the melting of glaciers. Higher sea levels increase the risk of more destructive floods and surges for coastal communities.
Environmental Considerations
While the use of AI offers promising benefits, it is important to consider its environmental impact. A great deal of energy and huge amounts of water are required to cool the data centers that power AI technologies. However, despite these challenges, AI and other applications of the technology could offer key climate benefits worth exploring.
Speaking about the significance of this study, Im noted, “This advanced reconstruction technology is particularly crucial for the Northwest Pacific, a region prone to frequent typhoons and climate variability.”
