George Lucas Makes Emotional Comic-Con Debut
George Lucas, the 81-year-old director behind the iconic Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, made a memorable debut at Comic-Con on Sunday. As he stepped onto the stage at the San Diego Convention Center, the audience responded with a heartfelt gesture—raising their lightsabers in tribute to the legendary filmmaker.
Queen Latifah, who served as the moderator for the panel, played a key role in highlighting Lucas’s impact on pop culture. She began by stating, “Star Wars has shaped our lives for generations and taught us we should trust our instincts. One person can change the course of history. And the force is always within us.” She continued, “His imagination has lived the path where generations of fans and filmmakers alike. He’s the reason we’re here today,” before introducing Lucas with excitement. “Please welcome for the first time ever at Comic-Con, give it up for the one, the only, George Lucas!” The audience erupted into applause as Lucas took the stage.
Lucas’s appearance at Comic-Con was particularly meaningful given his long-standing absence from the event. Despite being a central figure in the film industry for decades, this marked his first-ever appearance at the convention. Fans were thrilled to see him in person, especially after learning about his participation in a panel titled “Sneak Peek of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.”
During the discussion, Queen Latifah shared some interesting details about Lucas’s personal life. She revealed that he had amassed an impressive collection of 40,000 art pieces over the years. “I’ve been collecting art since I was in college and when I was in college which was sort of near the Stone Age, I couldn’t really afford real art. I love all art no matter what it is. But I could afford comic art because in those days it was underground,” she said.
Lucas reflected on his collection, explaining that he never intended to sell any of the pieces. “It occurred to me ‘what am I going to do with it all?’ Because I refuse to sell it. I’m not one of the typical high art collectors who buys and then come back five years later and you say, ‘what happened to that painting? You thought that was so beautiful. I sold it for $10 million I made a lot of money on it.’ I could never do that.”
The panel also featured Guillermo del Toro and Doug Chiang, who joined Lucas in discussing the power of illustrated stories and the role of narrative art in society. According to a press release, the conversation would explore the evolution of storytelling through various forms, from ancient cave drawings and hieroglyphics to modern digital media and sculptures. “This panel will delve into the universal language of illustrated storytelling,” the release stated.
David Glanzer, Comic-Con’s Chief Communications and Strategy Officer, expressed his excitement about Lucas’s appearance. “We are beyond thrilled to welcome George Lucas to Comic-Con for the very first time. Nearly five decades ago, Star Wars made one of its earliest public appearances at our convention, along with a booth featuring Howard Chaykin’s now legendary Star Wars poster as a promotional item.”
