George Lucas Shares Vision for Narrative Art Museum at San Diego Comic Con
At a packed Hall H panel during the San Diego Comic-Con, George Lucas made a memorable appearance, receiving a standing ovation from fans. The legendary creator of the Star Wars universe shared an exclusive glimpse into his upcoming narrative art museum, emphasizing the profound role of art in both his life and society as a whole.
Lucas spoke passionately about the importance of storytelling, stating that “some people believe in science, but science is an opinion.” He argued that stories are not just entertainment but a form of common mythology essential for human progress. He highlighted themes like love and community, suggesting that these ideas are not inherently real but serve as a foundation for shared belief systems.
“Those galleries all are illustrations of a particular mythology that we live with today, whether it’s love, whether it’s work, whether it’s… these are all not real, but it’s an idea that gives us a common belief system,” he explained. He added that collaboration is key to achieving great feats, noting that no one can build pyramids, palaces, or airplanes alone.
Lucas, known for creating what is arguably the largest science fiction universe ever, acknowledged the influence of science on his work. However, he also stressed that the genre has played a crucial role in inspiring modern scientific advancements.
“Science fiction is a myth,” he reminded his fans. “We have made it real, but we made it real because of science fiction books and art, and so that makes people say, ‘Oh, we could go to the moon.’ And once that idea is implanted, then we sort of believe we can do it.”
While he clarified that he doesn’t necessarily believe humans can travel to space, he emphasized the power of art in shaping reality. “You can’t really be inspired by what we think we know,” he added.
This marked George Lucas’s first appearance at San Diego Comic Con, drawing a massive crowd to Hall H. The Hollywood icon rarely makes public appearances, often letting his work speak for itself. However, his influence extends beyond films and books, especially after Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012.
The studio accelerated content production, expanding into television and video games. A recent addition to the Star Wars universe, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, features a new generation of young actors with guidance from established talent like Bryce Dallas Howard. The cast discussed the project during a MegaCon panel in Orlando, Florida, in early 2025.
San Diego Comic Con concluded shortly after Lucas’s impactful panel. The annual event, officially called Comic-Con International, brings together fans and creators from various genres for an exciting weekend filled with panels, exhibits, and interactions with beloved figures.
