George Lucas Makes Historic Comic Con Debut
George Lucas, the 81-year-old filmmaker behind the iconic Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, made a historic appearance at Comic Con on Sunday. This marked his first-ever appearance at the event, drawing a standing ovation from the crowd as he walked onto the stage at the San Diego Convention Center.
The atmosphere was electric, with fans waving lightsabers and showing their excitement for the legendary director. The panel was moderated by Queen Latifah, who introduced Lucas with heartfelt words about his impact on pop culture and the world of storytelling.
Latifah began by highlighting the influence of Star Wars, saying, “Star Wars has shaped our lives for generations and taught us we should trust our instincts. One person can change the course of history. And the force is always within us.” She continued, “His imagination has lived the path where generations of fans and filmmakers alike. He’s the reason we’re here today,” before adding, “Please welcome for the first time ever at Comic Con, give it up for the one, the only, George Lucas!” The audience responded with cheers and applause, showing their deep admiration for the filmmaker.
During the panel, Queen Latifah shared some interesting details about Lucas’s personal life. She revealed that he had amassed a collection of 40,000 pieces of art over the years. “I’ve been collecting art since I was in college and when I was in college which was sort of near the Stone Age, I couldn’t really afford real art. I love all art no matter what it is. But I could afford comic art because in those days it was underground.”
Lucas spoke about his collection, explaining, “It occurred to me ‘what am I going to do with it all?’ Because I refuse to sell it. I’m not one of the typical high art collectors who buys and then come back five years later and you say, ‘what happened to that painting?’ You thought that was so beautiful. I sold it for $10 million I made a lot of money on it. I could never do that.”
Fans were thrilled when it was announced earlier this month that Lucas would be making his Comic Con debut. Despite being a veteran in the film industry for decades, this was a long-awaited moment for many fans who have followed his work throughout the years.
Lucas was joined on the panel by Guillermo del Toro and Doug Chiang. The panel, titled “Sneak Peek of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art,” focused on the power of illustrated stories and the role of narrative art in society. According to a press release, the discussion would explore how storytelling through visual media has evolved over time, from ancient cave drawings and hieroglyphics to modern digital media and sculptures.
“From ancient cave drawings and hieroglyphics to paintings, murals, illustrations, comics, digital media, and sculptures, this panel will delve into the universal language of illustrated storytelling,” the release stated.
David Glanzer, Chief Communications and Strategy Officer of Comic-Con, expressed his excitement about Lucas’s appearance. “We are beyond thrilled to welcome George Lucas to Comic-Con for the very first time. Nearly five decades ago, Star Wars made one of its earliest public appearances at our convention, along with a booth featuring Howard Chaykin’s now legendary Star Wars poster as a promotional item.”
