In previous years, some of my cherished I/O memories included seeing Dave Burke step onto the Shoreline stage to discuss the newest developments in Android. However, over the last few years, Android hasn’t garnered as much attention at Google’s yearly developer gathering. This is set to shift, though, as the firm plans to host an exclusive presentation focused solely on this topic. The event, scheduled for May 13th, promises “a plethora” of revelations during what they’re calling the Android Show: I/O Edition.
The presentation will include Sameer Samat, the president of the Android ecosystem, taking over from Burke starting in 2024. What can be anticipated from Samat and his team? A sneak peek at Android 16 seems like a safe prediction. Google has already announced that this new OS version will launch before the latter part of the year. Therefore, they might roll out a stable version of Android 16 during the event itself. Among potential announcements about features included in Android 16 could be something similar to Live Activities.

Whether Google and Samsung demo Project Moohan at I/O, I imagine the search giant will have more to say about Android XR and the ecosystem partners it has worked to bring to its side for the initiative.

If Google felt the need to split off Android into its own showcase, we’re likely to get more AI-related announcements at I/O than ever before. The company hasn’t provided many hints about what we can expect on that front, but if I had to guess, features like
AI Overviews and AI Mode
are likely to get substantive updates. I suspect Google will also have something to say about

, the web-browsing agent showcased at I/O 2024. Regardless, Google has become an AI company now, and all future I/O events will showcase this shift.

At I/O 2024, Google demonstrated new advancements with their technology, highlighting the cutting-edge multimodal abilities of Google’s Gemini models. This introduced an innovative feature previously unseen from the company: a voice assistant equipped with sophisticated image recognition capabilities enabling it to discuss what it observes visually. Google foresees Project Astra as potentially delivering a highly effective AI assistant in the future.
