With the rise of smart home technology, many manufacturers are incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into their cameras to enhance functionality and attract customers. While these AI features can be impressive, it’s essential to test them in real-world scenarios to ensure they deliver on their promises rather than just serving as a marketing gimmick.
To evaluate how well these AI features perform, I tested four popular smart home cameras from well-known brands. The goal was to see how they functioned in real-life situations and how they compared to each other.
Ring Indoor Cam 2nd Gen
The Ring Indoor Cam 2nd Gen is a compact, cylindrical camera with an adjustable mount and a wired connection. It comes with a manual privacy cover that turns off both video and audio feeds when activated. Priced at $60, it offers 1080p HD video, color night vision, two-way talk, and a siren. It also includes customizable motion zones, real-time notifications, and quick replies with pre-recorded messages.
One of the standout features is the motion alerts with advanced pre-roll, which allows users to view a short clip of recorded activity directly from their phone’s notifications. The app also supports picture-in-picture viewing, enabling users to watch live feeds while performing other tasks.
Ring’s Smart Video Search, available with the Premium tier of its Home plan for $19.99/month, uses AI to help users quickly find specific events in their recorded history. This feature proved invaluable, allowing searches by keywords like “kids running” or “person wearing black.” It significantly improved the user experience, making it easier to locate relevant clips.
Another useful feature is Device Modes, which lets users customize recording settings based on whether they’re home or away. This helped reduce unnecessary alerts when the household was active.
Eufy Security Indoor Cam C220
Eufy’s Indoor Cam C220 offers 2K video resolution, 360-degree pan and tilt, and night vision. It has multiple mounting options and a privacy mode that turns the camera away and disables it. While no subscription is required for basic use, cloud storage or an SD card is needed for video playback.
The noise recognition feature is highly effective, picking up sounds from adjacent rooms. However, this can lead to extra notifications for minor movements. The app is intuitive, offering control over two-way talk, night vision, zoom, and motion zones.
Eufy’s AI features focus on motion tracking, which is particularly useful for monitoring movement in a room. However, the camera sometimes gets stuck in corners, resulting in poor visibility. Despite this, it successfully detected motion even in a cluttered bedroom, including a small black cat.
Wyze Cam V4
The Wyze Cam V4 is a small, boxy device with 2.5K QHD video resolution, color night vision, and local storage via an SD card slot. It is IP65 weatherproof, making it suitable for outdoor use. The camera also includes a motion-activated spotlight, siren, and two-way communication.
However, many advanced features, such as facial recognition and custom automations, are only available with the Cam Unlimited subscription ($9.99/month). Additionally, Wyze notifications were automatically sent to iOS summaries, which initially caused some confusion.
Wyze’s AI feature, Smart Focus, identifies and tracks subjects as they move within the camera’s field of view. It effectively recognized family members even in a cluttered environment. Two key features—Descriptive Alerts and AI video search—are only available with the pricier Cam Unlimited Pro plan.
Arlo Essential Indoor 2nd Gen
Arlo’s Essential Indoor 2nd Gen offers 2K video, night vision, two-way audio, and real-time notifications. It includes a privacy shield and can work with smart home assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant. The camera also has a siren and can alert first responders in emergencies.
Arlo’s AI features are part of the Arlo Secure Plan ($7.99/month), which includes real-time alerts for people, vehicles, packages, and animals. Customizable activity zones highlight specific areas for focused monitoring, and the 24/7 emergency response feature allows users to contact first responders with a single tap.
Final Thoughts
All four cameras performed well, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. While AI features like person, pet, and package detection should be standard in any modern security camera, some require additional subscriptions. Ring’s Smart Video Search is particularly useful for those who frequently review event history, while Eufy’s motion tracking is ideal for users who want AI to follow subjects around the home.
Ultimately, the choice depends on individual needs and preferences. Whether you prioritize AI-driven search capabilities, motion tracking, or emergency response features, there is a smart home camera that fits your requirements.
