Iran’s potential shift to BeiDou sends a clear message to other nations: the era of blind reliance on US-controlled infrastructure is ending. Countries are now more aware of the risks associated with depending on foreign systems, especially when it comes to military capabilities and digital sovereignty.

This sentiment is driving the development of national or regional satellite navigation systems. Examples include Europe’s Galileo and Russia’s GLONASS, both aiming to provide sovereign control over positioning technology.

Beyond GPS, Iran faced other vulnerabilities during the US-Israeli attacks. Israeli forces managed to assassinate several Iranian nuclear scientists and senior military officials. The ability to track these individuals raised fears that Israel had infiltrated telecommunications networks and could trace people via their phones.

In response, Iranian authorities urged citizens to stop using WhatsApp and delete it from their devices, claiming the app was collecting user data for Israel. While the connection to the assassinations remains unclear, the distrust of Meta, the company behind WhatsApp, is not unfounded.

Cybersecurity experts have long questioned the security of WhatsApp. Recent reports suggest that AI tools used by Israel to target Palestinians in Gaza may be fed data from social media platforms. Additionally, the U.S. House of Representatives recently moved to ban WhatsApp from official devices, further highlighting the growing concerns around data privacy and security.

For Iran and other countries, the message is clear: Western platforms are no longer just communication tools—they are seen as part of a larger digital intelligence war.

Iran has already begun developing its own intranet system, the National Information Network, which gives state authorities more control over internet usage. Future plans may involve expanding this system and potentially emulating China’s Great Firewall.

By moving away from Western-dominated infrastructure, Iran is aligning itself with a growing sphere of influence that challenges Western dominance. This partnership is not merely transactional; China offers Iran essential tools for achieving digital and strategic independence.

China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) plays a crucial role in this context. While often presented as an infrastructure and trade project, the BRI is about much more than roads and ports. It represents an ambitious plan to build an alternative global order. Iran, with its strategic location and role as a key energy supplier, is becoming an important partner in this vision.

What we are witnessing is the emergence of a new tech bloc—one that ties digital infrastructure with political defiance. Nations weary of Western double standards, unilateral sanctions, and digital hegemony are finding comfort and leverage in Beijing’s growing influence.
