In April, I had a chance to ask lead Diablo 4 developers how tough it is for their dev teams to
proceed to generate foreboding titles
for gameplay activities when they’ve spent 30 years exhausting every thesaurus in the demonic lexicon. Their answer: Pretty tough.
Last week, PC Gamer had a conversation with the head artists from the Diablo series, and we seized the chance to ask them a related question. Given their experience in crafting countless spiked, infernal armors, what methods do they use to maintain inspiration as they develop fresh Diablo equipment and monsters?
Berserk collaborations
or otherwise?

“What I encourage for the art team is to get out from Diablo once in a while,” Diablo Immortal lead artist Emil Salim said. “On the weekend, stop looking at Diablo imagery. Go to the museum, go to experience other things, go to Coachella, go look at various really different forms of art. That’s where a lot of the original ideas come from.”

Salim believes that despite being similarly dark, the Berserk crossover brought enough diversity to be beneficial for the Diablo Immortal development team.
Salim mentioned, “This type of collaboration was incredibly beneficial for our art team since it provided a fresh perspective visually.” He continued, “As artists, we carry an extensive mental repository of visuals, correct? Engaging in something distinct, such as during collaborations, truly assisted us in refreshing that mental archive. With the collaboration now complete and returning to our usual design work, it aids us in generating innovative concepts.”
The Lead Artist of Diablo 4, Viviane Kosty, expressed the same view.
Ponder over cooking. When you prepare and enjoy your meals, you venture into exploring different global cuisines to find parallels and contrast tastes, flavor profiles, spices, and ingredients. This allows you to return with renewed creativity and develop innovative dishes,” explained Kosty. He continued, “The creative process mirrors this approach in various fields like visual arts, fashion, and more. It’s essential to understand both your creations and those of others to foster innovation.
