Neanderthals and the Surprising Truth About Their Diet
For many years, it was widely believed that Neanderthals were strict carnivores, similar to lions or wolves, surviving almost exclusively on meat. This perception was largely based on chemical traces found in their bones, which suggested a diet high in animal protein. However, new research has challenged this long-standing assumption, revealing that Neanderthals may have had a more varied diet than previously thought.
One of the key findings from recent studies is that Neanderthals likely consumed a significant amount of maggot-infested meat. This discovery comes from an analysis of how meat stored by Neanderthals would have decomposed over time. When large animals were hunted, parts of the carcasses were often cached or stored for later use. Over time, these stored portions of meat would begin to rot, attracting flies and maggots. These maggots, in turn, became a part of the Neanderthal diet.
Dr. Melanie Beasley, an anthropologist at Purdue University, conducted research into how maggots might influence the chemical composition of remains. Her study showed that when a carcass rots, the muscles themselves only slightly increase in the specific form of nitrogen found in Neanderthal bones. However, when maggots feed on the flesh and are then consumed, they can be up to 43% richer in this type of nitrogen. This suggests that the chemical signature previously linked to a purely carnivorous diet could actually be influenced by the presence of maggots.
The researchers also pointed out that Neanderthals likely stored meat in various ways, such as placing it in rock cairns, suspended from trees, or buried in pits. These methods, while practical, would have made the meat susceptible to spoilage and infestation. The resulting maggot-filled meat could have been eaten weeks, months, or even years after the original hunt.
To further understand the nutritional value of maggots, scientists conducted an experiment using human bodies donated to the Body Farm facility at the University of Tennessee. After two years, the maggots present in the decomposing bodies were studied, revealing that they could have contributed significantly to the high levels of nitrogen found in Neanderthal remains.
Another important factor in re-evaluating the Neanderthal diet is the biological limit of protein consumption. A human body cannot sustain itself on more than about 300 grams of protein per day. Consuming more than this for extended periods can lead to a condition known as “rabbit starvation,” where the body begins to shut down due to an imbalance of nutrients. This makes it unlikely that Neanderthals maintained a strictly meat-based diet.
According to the researchers, Neanderthals probably ate a variety of animal tissues, including organs like the tongue, ribs, briskets, entrails, kidneys, and even the brain. These foods were rich in fat and other essential nutrients, making them valuable sources of sustenance.
The Persistence of the Hypercarnivore Narrative
Despite the evidence suggesting a more diverse diet, the image of Neanderthals as hypercarnivores has remained popular. Dr. Beasley believes this narrative persists because it adds to the mystique and fascination surrounding these ancient humans. She argues that while Neanderthals did eat meat regularly, they also consumed a wide range of other foods.
“Neanderthals ate meat starting with Homo erectus, but they also ate a variety of other foods,” she explained. “We need to consider those other dietary inputs, such as stored foods laced with fatty maggots, which would have been nutritionally beneficial.”
The study, published in Science Advances, offers a fresh perspective on Neanderthal life and challenges the traditional view of their diet. It highlights the importance of considering environmental factors, such as food storage and decomposition, when interpreting ancient diets.
This new understanding not only reshapes our perception of Neanderthals but also emphasizes the complexity of early human survival strategies. By acknowledging the role of maggots and stored meat, scientists are gaining a more accurate picture of how these ancient humans adapted to their environment.
