Microplastics Found in Remote Greek Caves, Raising Concerns About Environmental Pollution
A recent study has revealed the presence of microplastics in a remote mountainous region of Greece, highlighting the pervasive nature of plastic pollution. The research was presented at the 17th International Congress of the Geological Society of Greece in May and focused on the Gourgouthakas and Liontari caves, located in the White Mountains of Crete. These areas are known for their isolation and minimal human activity, making the discovery particularly alarming.
Scientists collected samples from various water sources within the caves and found “fibers and fragments” of blue and transparent microplastics. These particles measure less than 5 millimeters in diameter, indicating that they are far too small to be easily identified or removed. The researchers had to undertake a challenging expedition in August 2024, which involved hours of hiking and the transport of complex equipment to reach these remote locations.
According to a report by a Greece-based outlet, the findings suggest that microplastic pollution is not confined to urban or industrial areas. Christos Pennos, a visiting professor at Aristotle University, emphasized that this discovery demonstrates how even isolated regions can be affected by environmental contaminants. He noted that wind may have played a role in transporting these microplastics to the area, raising concerns about the long-range spread of plastic pollution.
