A New Species in the Deepest Oceanic Trenches
Scientists from
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)
and the Universidad de Concepción in Chile have recently identified a previously unknown predator: a small, four-centimeter crustacean. This species, named
Dulcibella camanchaca
, was discovered during a deep-sea expedition aboard the Abate Molina research vessel. The trench, part of the Peru-Chile Trench system,
reaches depths of 8,000 meters
, an environment that is as deep as Mount Everest is tall. Despite the harsh conditions,

thrives in this alien-like landscape.
Genomic testing confirmed that the crustacean is not only a new species but also belongs to an entirely new genus,
Dulcibella
. This adds weight to the argument that there are still many undiscovered life forms within the ocean’s deepest and least explored regions. Johanna Weston, the lead author of the study and an expert on the Hadal zone, emphasized that this discovery highlights the Atacama Trench as “an endemic hotspot,” where unique and previously unknown species are likely to be hiding.
The Atacama Trench: A Haven for Deep-Sea Life
Stretching over 3,700 miles along the coast, the Atacama Trench is one of the deepest places on Earth. Located off northern Chile, this part of the trench plunges to nearly 25,246 feet, making it a prime location for deep-sea research. In 2023, the Instituto Milenio de Oceanografía (IMO) conducted a survey in the area using the Abate Molina vessel. The specimens they retrieved were preserved and subjected to genetic analysis.
