Scientists Unveil Revolutionary Techniques to Reveal Invisible Colors

Many individuals perceive a specific spectrum of colors thanks to the cones within their eyes. Unfortunately, some experience various forms of color blindness and cannot differentiate between certain shades like red and green. Conversely, a select few possess a rare trait known as tetrachromia, which grants them an additional type of cone cells enabling them to discern a vast array of hues imperceptible to the majority of people.

What if there were a method to make the human eye perceive colors that it typically cannot detect?

Well, scientists have
lately devised a novel approach
Of shining light directly into the subjects’ eyes, causing them to perceive colors that they wouldn’t normally see.

In a recent study published in Science Advances, scientists have created a technique named Oz, which utilizes lasers to administer highly targeted pulses capable of stimulating particular retinal cone cells.

The technique caused participants in the experiment to perceive a strikingly vivid blue-green hue which they characterized as “unseen before.”

The innovative approach significantly diverges from the current methods of color production as it alters the eye’s cones directly instead of adjusting light spectra.

This new method “centers around spatial metamerism, which controls the spatial distribution of light on the retina rather than the spectra of light itself,” the researchers wrote in
a statement
Analysis of retinal cells indicated that this approach, known as Oz, influences the behavior of photoreceptors and facilitates the targeted activation of M cone cells.

Dr. Misha Corobyew clarified, “We possess three kinds of cone cells responsible for color vision—labeled S, M, and L based on their sensitivity to short, medium, and long wavelengths respectively—with these sensitivities partially overlapping each other.” He continued, “This overlap means that every type of light stimulates at least two different cone cell types concurrently, which restricts how vividly saturated the hues can appear to us. However, the research employs a process involving targeted laser beams aimed directly onto specific cones, thereby activating just one kind of cone cell. Through this approach of stimulating individual cones, new shades emerge that cannot be found within natural spectrums.”

Scientists are optimistic that this method could eventually serve as a treatment for individuals with color blindness, though currently, it has only reached the “proof of concept” stage.
