Steam will Stop Service on Old Windows – The harsh reality seems to be accepted by gamers who use older versions of Windows. Recently Steam, the digital game distribution service made by Valve announced it will no longer provide support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. The service will be discontinued on those OSes starting January 1, 2024.
This decision was taken because Steam wanted to bring major changes to its service in the future. The changes are expected to be incompatible with Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. Users trying to log in with that version will not be able to access the game library.
Players can only log in if the device they are using is an updated version of Windows such as Windows 10 or above. This was confirmed by Valve through its statement that it would cut off the old Steam service on Windows in early 2024.
“After that date, the Steam Client will no longer run on that version of Windows. In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to update to a newer version of Windows.”
The change was announced by the company in the latest Steam beta update. The beta has warned players running Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 to immediately switch or upgrade to a newer version.
The company says the upcoming Steam features will depend on the embedded version of Google Chrome. This of course no longer works on these older versions of Windows.

Based on data from Valve, only a small proportion of its service users run applications on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 devices. There is 1.86% of Steam’s user base across the three operating systems.
While the majority of Windows users, which account for 96.37% of the total active accounts on the platform, have used Windows 10, it has reached 62.33%, while those who have used Windows 11 are 32.06%.
