The YF-23: A Forgotten Fighter with a Potential Comeback

After the U.S. selected the YF-22 as its next-generation fighter, the YF-23 prototype seemed destined for obscurity. However, in 2018, there was speculation that Northrop Grumman might offer a modernized version of this super-stealthy jet to Japan for its own fighter program. Despite its advanced design and performance, Japan ultimately rejected the idea due to concerns over cost and the aircraft’s 1990s-era technology. Instead, Japan chose to co-develop a new 6th-generation fighter with the UK and Italy.

The YF-23 was developed by Northrop and McDonnell Douglas as a single-seat, twin-engine stealth fighter technology demonstrator. It was designed to replace the F-15 Eagle and was a finalist in the USAF’s Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) competition. The YF-23 lost out to the YF-22, which later became the F-22 Raptor. However, the YF-23 had several advantages, including superior all-aspect stealth and range compared to the F-22.

A Design Ahead of Its Time

The YF-23 featured a diamond-shaped wing and used composite materials, which gave it a sleek design and a radar cross-section smaller than that of the YF-22. Two prototypes were built: the “Black Widow” and the “Grey Ghost.” The first was powered by the Pratt & Whitney YF119, while the second used the General Electric YF120 turbofan for testing.

Although the YF-22 had slightly better top speed and maneuverability due to its thrust vectoring system, the YF-23 was considered a strong contender. Some believe that Northrop’s past scandals during the 1970s and 1980s may have influenced the decision in favor of the YF-22.

Japan’s F-X Program and the Global Combat Air Program

Japan initially wanted the F-22 Raptor but was denied by the U.S. due to concerns over proprietary technology. As a result, Japan decided to develop its own replacement for the J-2 fighter through Mitsubishi. In December 2022, Japan, the UK, and Italy announced the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP), a joint effort to develop a sixth-generation fighter aircraft. This project aims to replace the Eurofighter Typhoon in the UK and Italy, and the Japanese F-2.

The UK has named its contribution to the program “Tempest,” which is expected to enter service in 2035. It will feature advanced intelligent weapons systems, a software-driven cockpit, integrated sensors, and a next-generation radar capable of providing significantly more data than current systems. The collaboration between the three nations is expected to reduce development costs, estimated at around $40 billion.

Why the YF-23 Was Not Chosen

Despite its engineering prowess, the YF-23 was not selected for Japan’s F-X program for several reasons. First, Japan did not want to navigate the complexities of the U.S. Congress for the purchase of the aircraft. Second, while the YF-23 was an impressive design for its time, it would require significant upgrades to meet modern standards. Japan prefers to build its own components and invest in more contemporary designs.

Some experts suggest that the YF-23 was never truly a serious contender. While it remains a fascinating piece of aviation history, its 1990s technology and the challenges of integrating it into modern systems made it less appealing to Japan.

The GCAP represents a significant shift in how countries approach military aviation. By pooling resources and expertise, Japan, the UK, and Italy are creating a platform that could shape the future of air combat. This collaboration not only strengthens technological and industrial cooperation but also enhances regional security and stability.
