On Friday, the Department of Defense (DoD) disclosed that the missile fired from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on April 25 completed a successful end-to-end hypersonic flight test. This achievement represents the inaugural utilization of a seaborne cold-gas launch system.
Expected to be pivotal in forthcoming high-tech maritime weaponry deployments, this mechanism ensures the secure ejection of missiles from naval platforms like the USS Zumwalt prior to activation.

The Pentagon stated that information collected during the trial will aid in the ongoing development of the Common All-Up Round (AUR), a shared hypersonic missile project intended for use by both the Navy and the Army.
Secretary of the Navy John Phelan stated that the velocity, operational reach, and resilience of hypersonic weapons are crucial elements for comprehensive deterrence strategies in the U.S. He added that once deployed, Conventional Prompt Strike will provide unparalleled advantages to American forces.
Cold launch, big leap
The test comes as the United States intensifies its efforts to build hypersonic capabilities, joining Russia and China in a growing global race to master the technology. Russia has reportedly used hypersonic missiles in Ukraine, while China has denied testing such weapons, despite U.S. military claims.
Vice Adm. Johnny R. Wolfe Jr., Director of the Navy’s Strategic Systems Programs (SSP), emphasized that the cold-gas launch approach moves the Navy closer to safely deploying hypersonic systems.
The use of the cold-gas method enables the Navy to launch the missile away from the platform and ensure a secure altitude over the vessel before initiating the first stage,” Wolfe explained. “This technological advancement moves SSP nearer to delivering a safe and dependable hypersonic capability to our Navy.
The CPS program has played a crucial role in getting ready for the initial Navy deployment on the Zumwalt.
Prior to the flight test, the program conducted an extensive test campaign using an in-air launch test facility to validate the launch approach.
Information gathered from the test will help inform continued development of the AUR and its integration with surface ship platforms, the Navy said.

since 1988. A navigational warning issued by the U.S. Coast Guard hinted at a hypersonic test flight, outlining a broad security zone stretching into the Atlantic Ocean.
