Waymo and Toyota
Both see the possibility for a robust alliance.

A preliminary deal between Waymo—Alphabet’s self-driving car division—and Toyota was shared through a blog post from Waymo. This partnership underscores their dedication to advancing research into developing an autonomous vehicle system. Such a unified approach could significantly reshape city transportation for the better.
Waymo’s Expanding Robotaxi Services
In recent months, Waymo has accelerated its expansion via collaborations with Uber to introduce their “Waymo on Uber” autonomous taxi service. Currently operating in Austin, this service is set to launch soon in Atlanta as well. By doing so, Waymo can transfer part of the logistical responsibilities to Uber. According to the agreement, Waymo remains in charge of vehicle tests, emergency road services, and certain facets of customer support.
In a recent earnings call, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai provided the strongest hint so far that his company is heavily investing in individually owned, driverless cars. Michels mentioned that pursuing this path aligns perfectly with Waymo’s overall plan within the realm of autonomous driving technology.
On November 17, 2024, a Waymo autonomous vehicle was seen in San Francisco’s Inner Richmond district, highlighting its use of Lidar technology. This observation aligns with comments made by Pichai regarding the growth of Waymo’s service offerings and fleet.
A Common Goal for Safety and Accessibility
Waymo and Toyota are teaming up to improve ride-sharing services. They aim to collaborate on making travel safer for everyone. Preventing traffic collisions is a key objective for Toyota, as stated by spokesperson Hiroki Nakajima.
