— Waymo is looking to expand and will be investing in the East Valley to do it. The self-driving car service company
announced on its blog on Monday
that it’s teaming up with
Magna
, a Canadian auto parts supplier, to build a factory in Mesa.
Waymo stated that the plant will span 239,000 square feet and represents a “significant multi-million-dollar commitment” aimed at generating numerous employment opportunities to back their expansion strategies. “It brings me great satisfaction witnessing self-driving cars navigate our roads daily, ensuring safe transportation for everyone. This new production site will amplify this initiative, with the positions being created contributing positively to the advancement of Arizona’s technology sector on an international level,”

stated in a written declaration.
Waymo intends to construct thousands of completely self-driving vehicles.

Over the coming year, the facility in Mesa will assist with this objective. “Our Waymo Driver integration plant in Mesa stands as the core of our expansion strategy,” stated Ryan McNamara, vice president of operations at Waymo. “Collaborating with Magna, we’ve established a production hub capable of enhancing cost-effectiveness, adaptability, and scalability for expanding our vehicle fleet.” The exact location within Mesa and the opening timeline for the plant remain undisclosed.
Waymo said the facility’s design would allow the company to integrate its self-driving system, Waymo Driver, now in its sixth generation, with its new vehicle, the Zeekr RT, which was revealed at CES 2025. The plant will have an automated assembly line, and when it’s operating at full capacity, it will build tens of thousands of fully autonomous Waymo cars each year, the company said.
Waymo said it provides more than 250,000 trips each week across its four markets: Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Austin, Texas. Next year, the company plans to expand to Atlanta, Miami and Washington, D.C.
