
The Soviet space program placed significant hopes on the Cosmos 482 mission upon its launch in March 1972. This mission featured a lander intended for Venus exploration. However, the craft failed to escape Earth’s orbit and is now returning back, though this outcome is far from desirable.

Known also as Kosmos 482, this lander probe had a launching weight exceeding 1,000 pounds and was equipped with tools meant for exploring the extreme conditions on the surface of Venus, our solar system’s second planet.
After achieving Earth orbit and splitting into four segments, two of these components rapidly drifted away from their orbital path. Meanwhile, the lander probe along with the upper-stage engine assembly ascended into a more elevated orbit. According to NASA, it appears that a failure led to a propulsion issue where the rocket failed to reach the necessary speed for transitioning towards Venus, thus leaving the spacecraft caught in this elongated loop around our planet.
The spacecraft has been journeying slowly back towards Earth over several decades, and the moment of rendezvous is nearly upon us. The possible re-entry period spans from May 7th through May 13th. An exact date or place remains uncertain. Since Cosmos 482 will descend without controlled entry, forecasting its trajectory will be challenging.
Approximately 71% of Earth’s surface is covered by water; therefore, any remnants of Cosmos 482 that make it through the intense atmospheric re-entry should safely splash down into an ocean. Nevertheless, there remains a likelihood that some fragments could end up on terrestrial areas instead.
