Approval has been granted for a dual portable classroom facility at a southern primary school on the Isle of Man to cater to an increasing student population.
As per the proposal, a mobile classroom unit will be installed at Ballasalla Primary School to accommodate two teaching spaces along with bathroom amenities, replacing the current community cabins located within the premises.

‘Temporary structures’
The Department for Education, Sports, and Culture, which filed the application, stated that due to the increasing enrollment numbers and the particular requirements of the institution, a double classroom was considered essential instead of a single one.
The classroom was required for September, as the school enrollment had consistently risen from 95 students in the 2019-20 academic year to an expected 167 in September 2024. The document noted that the school’s maximum capacity remained at 131 students.
The planning officer who suggested approving it noted that the government appeared to be using many portable classrooms, but added “we are where we are with funding.”
Although it wasn’t “the ideal choice” considering the intended use where “more enduring options ought to be pursued instead of depending on provisional setups,” the planning officer mentioned that the suggestions were deemed “adequate” regarding their usage and aesthetic effect.
Peter Whiteway, a member of the Planning Committee, expressed disappointment over “the significant residential construction in the vicinity,” noting that the local school was “insufficient” to accommodate the increasing population.
In spite of the remarks, the application received approval from the committee.
