Hundreds of gig racers and myriad observers are set to arrive at the Isles of Scilly this weekend for the 34th installment of the World Pilot Gig Championships.
Contestants of every age will paddle traditional pilot gigs, which are a kind of boat.

In a sequence of races taking place from May 2nd to 4th along the coastline of Saint Mary’s – which is the biggest island in the Isles of Scilly.
The championship commenced in 1990 with just a few teams, yet it has expanded to be recognized as the “largest and most prestigious competition” on Scilly’s events schedule, states Tristan Hick, the chairperson of the organizing committee.
Mr. Hick stated that the islands, located 28 miles off Cornwall, will become “entirely dedicated to rowing and rowers,” with most visitors coming either to participate or observe.
‘Team spirit’
He stated that the event marked the “apex of the sport,” and he also noted, “This is what we anticipate all year long.”
Mr. Hicks stated that around 450 teams were anticipated to participate in the three-day event, attracting an audience of 2,000 to 3,000 spectators.
Teams will arrive from various locations throughout the southwest and the UK, along with multiple teams from the Netherlands, all heading to the islands for the event.
“I think some people really enjoy the history of it, they love the team spirit that there is,” he said.
This is a fantastic social gathering along with being an extremely competitive setting. I believe these aspects complement each other to form a rather distinctive sporting event.
This year’s championships have added new events, featuring categories specifically for competitors under 25 years old.
Mr. Hicks stated that the organization has implemented reusable festival cups created by a local artist from St. Martin’s this year as part of their initiative to decrease reliance on single-use plastics.
