Introduction to IAA Mobility Show 2025

Messe Munich has announced that it will showcase Germany’s smart city technology through the IAA Mobility Show 2025, set to take place in Munich. This event aims to redefine traditional automobile exhibitions by transforming into an integrated solution platform for urban infrastructure innovation.

The exhibition is scheduled for September 9 and will feature Germany’s leading research and policy institutions. These include the Federal Ministry for Digital Transport (BMDV), the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and the Fraunhofer Institute. Attendees can expect to see AI-based transportation systems and autonomous driving technology demonstrations.

Key Initiatives and Collaborations

In July, the BMDV launched the public-private mobility expert forum ‘EKMI’ and outlined five major areas as part of its climate-neutral transportation strategy. These areas include the expansion of electric vehicles, decarbonization of freight transport, innovation of local transportation, strengthening of railways and waterways, and expansion of renewable fuels.

As part of the Urban Transportation Optimization Using AI project, the German government selected Leipzig and Landau as demonstration cities. The AI-based data model analyzes and predicts traffic flow, controlling actual vehicle operations in the city center. The plan is to introduce this AI traffic system to more than 45 regions by the end of the year.

Autonomous Driving and Infrastructure Development

The DLR has started operating an autonomous driving test fleet in Braunschweig. This structure combines a vehicle’s lower platform with an interchangeable capsule that carries people or cargo. It supports last-mile logistics and transportation in the city center simultaneously.

The German government is investing 35 million euros in this project to demonstrate the commercialization potential of autonomous driving. The goal is to connect it to changes in urban design, infrastructure, and governance beyond simple transportation innovation.

The Fraunhofer Institute is developing integrated solutions in 12 key areas, including autonomous driving, smart transportation, road safety, and connected infrastructure. They are focusing on data-based road infrastructure design, AI-based traffic management technology, and a transportation platform that connects the countryside and the city as means of urban transformation.

Experiences and Demonstrations at the Exhibition

Messe Munich is using the IAA as a stage for the entire city beyond the exhibition hall. They have designed city test drive zones and technology demo spaces throughout Munich so that participants can experience the actual technology.

DLR will unveil AI-based traffic simulation technology and an ‘ultra-low particle emission electric vehicle’ that even blocks brake and tire dust. The Fraunhofer Institute plans to present autonomous driving systems and data-based urban infrastructure design while proposing a collaboration model between industry and policy.

The BMDV announced that it will operate both an indoor exhibition hall and an outdoor downtown booth, implementing a three-dimensional structure that connects policy and technology within the exhibition.

Vision for Future Mobility

A Messe Munich official stated that the event is being redefined as a space that realizes the reality of future mobility by gathering not only traditional automobile manufacturers but also urban infrastructure, data technology, cloud solutions, and research institutes. He added that the IAA Mobility Show 2025 is the stage where the German smart city project is most concisely implemented.
