Understanding the Magic Remote on LG Smart TVs
LG has long been a leader in the television manufacturing industry, especially known for its impressive 4K OLED TVs. The brand also offers a wide range of LED-LCD sets, soundbars, and other AV entertainment products. If you own an LG smart TV made within the last decade, you’ve likely noticed the Magic Remote that comes with it. This remote features four colored buttons: red, green, yellow, and blue.
These buttons are not programmable but serve as shortcut commands, each assigned to a specific function. However, these keys only work under certain conditions and need to be activated before they can be used. To enable them, simply press the mute button three times in a row to access a pop-up menu and select the option to activate the shortcut keys. Once enabled, you can start using the colored buttons for various functions.

What the Red and Green Keys Do
The red button on the Magic Remote has two primary functions. First, it initiates an AV Reset, which restores all picture and sound settings to their factory defaults. To use the AV Reset, you must be on the home screen of your LG TV. The second function of the red button is helpful when using LG’s web-browsing app. Pressing the red key while a webpage is open will bring up the TV’s built-in keypad, making it easier to type in URLs and search terms.
The green button also has two functions. One is the ability to auto-tune your LG TV from the home screen. Auto-tuning scans for available channels and saves them to your TV. This feature is typically needed only if you have an OTA antenna connected, as most users won’t require it otherwise.
The second function of the green button allows you to delete items when using certain apps, such as the Photos and Videos app. When an app with selectable elements is open, pressing the green key enables you to choose items for deletion.
What the Yellow and Blue Keys Do
The yellow key has two useful functions as well. First, when on the home screen, pressing the yellow key sends a power-on command to your TV’s connected set-top box. This could be a cable box or a streaming device like a Roku or Amazon Fire TV. However, the functionality may vary depending on the specific device.
Additionally, pressing the yellow key while using TV apps allows you to place the TV in Select Mode, which can be useful for navigating through content.
The blue key features two final commands. The first is accessible only on the home screen and opens the remote service screen. If you’re experiencing issues with your TV, this page may be necessary for an LG technician to remotely access your TV.
